The first day of Spring is officially Monday! Since it’s not quite warm enough here in the Midwest for us to begin gardening outside, I love bringing a little bit of the outdoors in. I really enjoy incorporating natural elements and greenery into our decor but unfortunately, at this point in life, I don’t have the necessary time or patience to give any indoor plants the love they deserve. I’ve tried fiddle leaf figs, but they were just too fiddly for me. I’ve tried orchids, using only an ice cube a week to water them… still they didn’t last long. Finally, though, I found a winner: succulents. They are one of the most forgiving plants and have worked so well for this busy Mom. If you need something event lower maintenance, you can get faux one (no worries: faux is the new real, anyway!) – Hobby Lobby sells the most realistic looking succulents and when you layer them with natural elements like dirt, rocks, and moss, even the well-trained eye can’t tell the difference. Over two years ago I made these terrariums ( IN FIVE EASY STEPS) and they still look beautiful.

What you need:

1. Succulents.  Real ones I purchase from Home Depot, faux I purchase from Hobby Lobby. They have a fantastic assortment of the most real looking ones including green and gray succulent, purple mini succulent pick, green succulent pick, green succulent pick, or light green air plant.
2. Small mixed river stones
3. Chartreuse soft reindeer moss
4. Potting soil dirt from your backyard
5. Terrarium. I have this large gold geometric metal & glass terrarium this faceted terrarium and this cube terrarium.  Several more are linked below.

Step One: Start with your terrarium and add a layer of small mixed river stone

Step Two: Add a layer of potting soil.

Step Three: Add in your succulent. If using a real succulent, take it out of plastic and open up the roots using your fingers. If using faux from Hobby Lobby, use scissors or wire cutters to shorten the stem. Insert into potting soil.

Step Four: Add in your layer of chartreuse soft reindeer moss use your one hand to hold back the succulent while using your other hand to tuck in the moss around the succulent.

Step Five: Clean any dirt off your terrarium with Windex.

Watering: If planting faux, there’s no need to worry about watering. If you planted real succulents the general rule is to thoroughly water the soil, then wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again. Don’t let the roots sit in water because it will cause them to die. Use a spray bottle filled with water to evenly water them.
