April 24, 2020

Painted straw bags  & french farmers market totes are all the rage right now. Several I’ve found are all well over $100. I decided to create the look for MUCH less myself. Sharing an easy tutorial with you how to DIY painted straw beach bag.

I actually did my DIY last Spring, and it has lasted all summer. I love this from Target for $35.99 (it’s still available in store) because it’s large enough to fit all our stuff (both my children’s swim gear, toys, towels, sunscreen) but still is so cute, and HELLO you had me at colored tassels!!

Here is what you’ll need-

  1. Straw BagStraw Bag or French Farmer’s Market Tote
  2. Paint Brush
  3. Masking Tape
  4. Paint (I used our left over house paint from our bedroom 🙂
  5. Acrylic Spray (Clear or Matte Finish)

Supplies

Step One -Tape your bag based on the shape you would like to paint. I went with stripes but you could get creative and paint a heart, star, circle etc. Press the masking tape firmly to the bag to prevent the paint from bleeding. Take off your tassel if you purchase the same Target bag.

Step Two-Paint your first color, I went with white. After you paint let dry for 15 minutes or until dry to touch and apply a second coat. Keep your first color out just in case you need later for touch ups.

STEP 2 PAINT WHITE copy

Step Three- Remove your masking tape

Step 4- Paint your second color between the white lines. Paint one coat, after you paint let dry for 15 minutes or until dry to touch and apply a second coat. You might need to touch up your lines a bit. Touch up the white or gray edges with your left over paint.

Step 5-Spray your bag (in a well ventilated area, preferably outside) to seal paint. Let dry for an hour (don’t forget to put the tassel back on your bag 🙂
