When you think of fall you automatically think of pumpkins, the leaves dropping, temperatures getting more mild. Fall is a great time to plant and add new life and color into your garden. I love outdoor planters, just for this reason. Take what you’ve already planted for summer and add to it. Or, start fresh, and bring in new colors and plantings that will take you well into the cooler months. This year I’m sharing 5 different fall planters with Platt Hill Nursery.
You have several options when creating your fall planters.
Platt Hill Nursery artfully created 5 different fall planter variations for our family, working within our budget.
Here are 5 different fall planter ideas to inspire you this season!
Planter #1
Lemongrass provides height for the center of the planter. It’s a multi-purpose plant that can be cut and added to recipes and beverages for lemon flavor. Ivy adds trailing to the bottom of the planter and offsets the pop of yellow with the mums & crotons. My absolute favorite fall plants are ornamental cabbage and kale and this cabbage takes on a red & pink hue.
Planter #2
Japanese blood grass is a perennial plants, meaning it lives for more than two years. If you want you could plant the Japanese blood grass from your planter in the ground after using it in the planter. October / November would be an ideal time to do that, making sure you put lots of mulch around it. In the Spring, spread that mulch around and see what comes up.
Planter #3
Planter #4
All plantings are new growth for fall, not leftover from the spring. The deep red celosia will continue to grow in height. More of that interesting kale adds texture. Dusty Millers are one of my favorite flowers and the pop of white against the purple and green adds a bit of the unexpected. Dusty Millers are a good plant, to take you into the cooler months. You can keep them in your planters and think about adding evergreens and birch sticks.
Planter #5
Spikes are tried and true and add height to the center of planters. Textured kale also adds more height. Instead of using a mum in this planter we added color with ornamental peppers in green and yellow. Petunias and pansies for even more of that rich orange and yellow fall foliage.
I hope these 5 different fall planter ideas inspire you this season.
