We’ve made several updates to our home since purchasing it. Larger projects like remodeling your kitchen and basement can significantly increase your homes value. However, don’t underestimate smaller improvements.  When collectively made, these improvements can make a big impact. Home improvements such as updating lighting, interior & exterior doors, vents and door and cabinet hardware, not only transform the aesthetic of your home, but also help to increase its value too. Today I’m sharing how we updated our door hardware with Emtek.

When updating your door hardware you need to keep 3 things in mind:

Function, Finish and Style.

Function

What is the function of the door?  Is it an exterior door that multiple individuals need access to? Maybe a keyless electronic lock with passcode is an ideal solution.  Will you need a deadbolt, will it be a passage door (you walk through with no lock). Most interior doors will facilitate either a passage or privacy knob.

Finish

Emtek’s brochure and website feature all available door and cabinet hardware finishes. We went with two different finishes. Our first floor door hardware finish is polished nickel finish US14. Our basement door hardware is oil rubbed bronze finish US10B.

Style

We went with the providence knob with rectangle rosette. Spend time on both Emtek’s brochure and website to see their multiple knob and rosette options. You can select the combination that best fits your design style.

When ordering your door hardware you’ll need to also order door hinges. Remember your hinge finish will need to match your handle finish. We went with product 96133. Find all hinges on pages 86 & 87 of Emtek’s brochure.

You’ll also need to measure your door thickness, as this affects size of hardware. Standard thickness for an interior door is 1 3/8.

When placing your order make note of the latch and strike. We needed a 1/4 radius latch and strike plate, with a 2 3/8 backset. The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the 2-1/8-inch bore hole. In the United States, there are two common backsets for residential door locks: 2 3/8 inches and 2 3/4 inches. Click here to learn how to measure your backset.
